Maria Chavez, a pioneer of abstract turntablism, will showcase her improvisational practice with a single turntable, incorporating broken needles and non-musical sounds. Chavez doesn’t just play; she smashes and scratches records, and she gets up to all sorts of antics, making the performance an equal presence to the music. SlowPitchSound, a Toronto-based composer, will perform his signature style of music production, blending turntablism, sample manipulation, and field recordings to create sci-fi-inspired soundscapes. SlowPitchSound creates in the spirit of Afrofuturism, and his sounds will soothe and unsettle in one fell swoop. Montreal guitarist Mat Ball will contribute to the cause of sound experimentation with his solo performance, showcasing his refined balance of massive and fragile sounds. Ball takes a conceptual approach to his performances in which he “plays the room,” Ball constantly seeks to make the environments in which he is performing as resonant as an instrument possible. Together, these artists promise an evening of immersive sound exploration, with each artist invested in the room-as-instrument as much as their noise-makers.
