Joined by a cast of local luminaries, Matana Roberts returns with the fourth chapter of their acclaimed Coin Coin series. This project has received the highest acclaim for its originality and powerful narrative. The first three Coin Coin albums, released between 2011 and 2015, explored modern/avant composition through various ensembles, focusing on the legacies of the American slave trade and non-male subjects. In Coin Coin Chapter Four: Memphis, the album unfolds as a continuous work of 21st-century liberation music, blending meditative incantations, melodic themes, and free improvisation. Roberts' conducting and unique graphic score practice guide the compositions, which incorporate their saxophone and clarinet playing as well as their vocals and texts derived from historical research and personal writings.
