Part one of our evening in collaboration with Astral Spirits and cow: Music celebrating free jazz and other untethered kinds of music. Taking influence from the Coltranes and Carnatic music in equal measure, composer/vocalist Amirtha Kidambi, joined here by percussionist Matt Evans, is at the centre of many prominent spheres of contemporary jazz. As a duo, Kidambi & Evans create a nerve-wracking, rhythmic ritual designed to cleanse. Joining from Vancouver, Feven Kidane is an Ethiopian-Canadian composer, trumpeter, bassist, and electronic musician drawing from traditions of Black American Music ("jazz") of the '60s and '70s, studying its foundational components of decolonization, creation, spirituality, and self-liberation.
