Gillingham will show a number of metal weavings, that is, post-consumer-found relics of our urban landscapes woven into sculptural, painterly, textile fabrications. Deconstructive activities and thoughts evolved into a constructive regenerative process of approaching and understanding his environment through observation, recognition and rearrangement.
Evoking nuanced relationships, sameness and differences informed by an ongoingly emergent inter / intra / trans dialectical ethic. Tapestries attuned to assertions and valuations of individuality, collectivity, class, usefulness, disposability, extraction, gender, personhood, ableism and aesthetics entwining multiplicities, indeterminacy and complexity. Interlaced artifacts of our present microhistoric tensions embodied in strained resources, entangled upcycled “reworkings” of our common spaces of post / re / deindustrialization, digitization and over / underconsumption. Routes, records, and pathways map this growth, curiosity, discovery, challenge, acceptance, adaptation and togetherness, strand upon strand.
Intermingling perspectives, informing / affording deepening experience. Stamped letters on their surfaces create poetic textual mosaics, varyingly clear and concise to wandering subjective insights, re / decontextualizing messages. Supported by a strong steady underoverunderoverunderover praxis with materials, words, surfaces and spaces drawing connections across social, technological and environmental conditions.
Also on display will be sculptures, welded works with some cast concrete elements..volumes, trajectories, planes and edges..hammering text into steel, materializing words, disruption of linear reading, weaving meanings... affective yearnings....and in the Casa windows will be a continuity of text - poetic playing with words embedded in transparent plastic, with lights inviting people outside in past the glass and through the bars...
