A 5@7 talk with Skempton and Hasegawa.
On the occasion of his first visit to Montreal, composer and accordeonist Howard Skempton will talk about his beginnings with the Scratch Orchestra and Cornelius Cardew.
Now in his seventies, Skempton shares with us his unique perspective as an active figure in the British experimental scene since the late 1960s. A unique testimony not to be missed!
Howard While Skempton is an English composer, pianist, and accordionist. Since the late 1960s, when he helped to organise the Scratch Orchestra, he has been associated with the English school of experimental music. Skempton's work is characterised by stripped-down, essentials-only choice of materials, absence of formal development and a strong emphasis on melody. The musicologist Hermann-Christoph Müller has described Skempton's music as "the emancipation of the consonance"
In addition to his extensive scholarly work in the field of music research and music theory, McGill Univeristy’s Professor Robert Hasegawa is also an active composer. He is passionate about music that challenges preconceptions and his research focuses on 20th and 21st century experimental and avant-garde music. He examines the use of sounds to create perceptual and expressive effects by collaborating with psychologists, composers, sound engineers and performers. He also recently worked on a project to increase the representation of women and BIPOC composers in McGill’s music curriculum.
