"Lyrebird Hotel" features performances by Elizabeth Lima, Lori Freedman, Julie Houle et Julie Richard. The event is centred around the concept of the Lyrebird Hotel in which an allegorical hotel, the lyrebird, a master of mimicry, connects the inner world of multiple characters inspired by female artists who have been categorized as "mad, bad or sad" breaking their isolation. It serves as a metaphor for improvisation, an act of social interaction in which we attempt to understand the other and their relationship to others through imitation, response or dialogue. The characters describe their state through improvisations and compositions that mix multiple vocal and instrumental techniques, from lyrical singing to cabaret, goth and growl to noise music and textured synthesizers and cassette tapes, and by wearing absurd and baroque costumes. The lyrebird pays homage to these great artists, whose magnitude of perception and sensitivity offers the most refined perspectives on the state of being human.
Elizabeth Lima is an improviser, clarinetist, vocalist, composer, and performer in many genres. Lori Freedman is a member of the international group of people currently named "the renaissance musicians." Julie Houle is a performer and improviser, playing tuba, euphonium, and sousaphone, with classical training but also devoted to various styles such as gypsy, fanfare, pop, jazz, and improvisation. Julie Richard, a Haitian-Canadian composer, musician and historian of Black women composers.
