Shanta Nurullah
Shanta Nurullah has distinguished herself as a sitarist and bassist exploring African-American improvisational music. A legendary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) member, Nurullah co-founded the all-women's bands Sojourner and Samana. Her current projects include the bands Sitarsys and Classic Black; the duo ShaZah; and Freedom Song Leaders, a vocal ensemble. She has played with Nicole Mitchell, Dee Alexander, Junius Paul, David Boykin, Tomeka Reid, Saalik Ziyad, and the AACM Great Black Music Ensemble. She teaches at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music.
