Ratchet Orchestra
Hailing from Montreal's avant-garde music scene, The Ratchet Orchestra eggs the boundaries of music-making by exploring the dynamic interplay between instinctive and intellectual approaches. With personnel that includes some of Montreal's most imaginative and engaging musicians, the group creates a sonic cauldron of jazz, contemporary European, noise, and musique actuelle that coalesce in unexpected and exciting ways.
Led by bassist Nicolas Caloia, the Orchestra's 2012 album "Hemlock" (released on Vancouver-based label Drip Audio) received critical acclaim. It was nominated for both Juno and GAMMIQ awards, cementing its place as one of the most exciting experimental groups of the time.
Since their inception in 1995, The Ratchet Orchestra has been producing their shows, showcasing their distinctive sound at major avant-garde music festivals such as FIMAV, Guelph Jazz Festival, and Montreal's Suoni per il Popolo. Their live shows are an adrenaline-jolting display of the group's musical prowess, as they seamlessly blend various styles of music into a cohesive and exhilarating whole. In The Ratchet Orchestra’s sonic world, the lines between genres are blurred, and creativity reigns supreme.
