Myriam Gendron
Myriam Gendron is an Ottawa-born musician and Montreal import who works as a copy editor and book dealer, which led to her discovery of an anthology of Dorothy Parker's poetry titled Not So Deep as a Well. The poems resonated with Myriam, and she began putting them to music.
“Before even understanding the meaning of the words, I heard a song,” she says. “I flipped through the pages, and it just kept happening.” Myriam's debut album, Not So Deep as a Well, was recorded and mixed in her bedroom. It started as a simple project but became more serious as she absorbed Parker’s work. The album is a nine-track masterpiece that captures the essence of love and hatred in a brutally honest, mischievous, humorous, and melancholic style.
Myriam's latest album, Ma Délire. Songs of Love, Lost and Found, was released in 2021, largely featuring her contemporary interpretations of popular Canadian music. The album includes traditional songs such as “Au cœur de ma délire,” “Par un dimanche au soir,” and “Le tueur de femmes,” as well as her interpretations of several traditional songs from other cultures such as the heart-shattering “Go Away From My Window” and “Shenandoah.”
“Literature is a passion for me, and in folk music, I’ve found a literary form that suits me well,” she explains, adding: “I love all kinds of music: alternative music, metal… I like when it rips, and folk is not incompatible with that.”
