Guy Thouin & Aaron Leaney
Fresh off of their large ensemble performance at 2023’s FIMAV festival, saxophonist Aaron Leaney (Ratchet Orchestra) reunites with legendary drummer, Guy Thouin to perform music from their debut duo vinyl release, Lockdown out on the Austin, Texas based label Astral Spirits Records.
Their music focuses deeply on the intersectionality of Leaney’s Indo-Caribbean heritage, Thouin’s multiple exoduses to India in the 1970s when he studied with tabla guru Karamuthulla and their shared vocabulary as fierce improvisers despite the four-decade age gap between them. Lockdown is the first documented studio recording of Guy Thouin's lifelong exploration in sound and rhythm featuring his folkloric, DIY hybrid drum kit setup featuring double kick drums, frame drums, tablas, Tibetan singing bowls, Indian bells, Japanese gongs and vintage cymbals.
At 84, Thouin is the only surviving member of the Robert Charlebois « Lindberg » collaborating band, Le Quatuor de Jazz Libre du Québec (1967) and his unique thunderous grass-roots playing propels Leaney’s emotive compositions and multi-textured improvisations along with his playing on the Zimbabwean mbira thumb piano and west African flulani flute.
