Chabanel
Founded in Montreal in 2014, Chabanel is a musical project composed of Gabriel Sasseville-Jolicoeur (prepared bass, synthesizers, and electronic treatments) and Jordan Torres Bussière (vocals, synthesizers, and electronic treatments). Their music incorporates feedback, sampling, and electronic lutherie made in urgency. Chabanel moves between fierce bursts of energy and moments of bliss and discomfort.
By subverting aesthetic codes and using sound material, the project aims to raise issues related to acculturation stemming from Anglo-Saxon hegemony, cultural production, masculinity, and capitalism. The goal is primarily to dissect reality, agitate its remaining skin, and, at best, create new foundations to avoid the current state of affairs. They released a self-titled EP in the spring of 2017, followed by Play Queue (2018) and Brûle (2021), both co-produced with Mathieu Arsenault (Seulement, Technical Kidman).
Although normally a duo, Chabanel collaborated in 2019 with Claude Périard (Claude l'Anthrope) and Raphaël Néron for the multidisciplinary show Intersections, featuring the musical performance "Regarde derrière nous, ce charognage incessant," presented at Maison de la Culture Maisonneuve. An audiovisual and zine documentation was released under the same title in 2020 on the Montreal label Small Scale Music.
