Chavajay
Salvador Chavajay is a Guatemalan of Mayan origin and has been living in Quebec for six years. He began his musical education at the age of 4 and, like his grandfather, a virtuoso of the traditional xylophone, his only goal was to express himself through music. He graduated in Guatemala from the Conservatorio Nacional de Música Germán Alcántara in piano and went on to perfect his skills at the Conservatorio Stanislao Giacomantonio in Italy and then with Madame Suzanne Goyette at the Conservatoire de Musique de Montréal. In Quebec, he was in the cast of three short films that showcased his acting and piano skills and were seen in over 100 international festivals. He won the Best Actor Award at the Quetzalcoatl Indigenous International Film Festival in Mexico. In 2021 and 2022, he was awarded a CALQ and CDA Canada grant to explore writing and composing that pairs rap in Tzutujil, his native language, with the themes of classical piano works he performs. With the support of artist Samian, Salvador released his first album, "CHAVAHAZE," on the NIKAMO MUSIK label in November 2022. He is working on a second album with Quebec artists, combining French lyrics with his native language.
